Hartwick goalie Munarriz named to MAC academic team

Hartwick junior goalkeeper Mateo Munarriz has been named to the 2013 Academic All-Mid-American Conference Team, which was announced Wednesday.

Munarriz is one of 13 players from the MAC to earn the distinction.

Hartwick senior Matthew Robertson, junior Rio Dhat, and sophomores Jack Miller, Dean Fowler, Nick Hills and David Styles were among 22 honorable mentions.

The Academic All-MAC award is for student-athletes who have excelled in athletics and academics. To qualify, a student-athlete must have a least a 3.20 cumulative GPA and have participated in at least 50 percent of the games for a particular sport. It is voted upon by faculty athletics representatives from MAC institutions.

Munarriz played every minute of every game in goal for Hartwick this season. He finished with a goals-against average of 1.04 in 1,737 minutes, with 52 saves and four shutouts. An economics major at Hartwick, Munarriz carries a cumulative grade-point average of 3.86.

Robertson started in 15 games on the back line for the Hawks in his final season with the program. He is pursuing a degree in geology with a 3.29 GPA.

Dhat played in 11 games and majors in economics and business administration (3.97 GPA).

Miller started every game. He majors in mathematics and physics (3.90 GPA).

Fowler made 10 starts in 16 appearances at the forward position. Fowler is majoring in economics (3.79 GPA).

Hills played in 12 games, including five starts. He is majoring in geology (3.52 GPA).

Styles had a goal and two assists in 11 games. Styles majors in business administration (3.34 GPA).

OHS grad honored

Oneonta High graduate Dani Nicosia, a freshman for Herkimer County Community College, was selected as an NJCAA Division III Second Team All-American by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America.

Nicosia had eight goals and three assists in helping the Generals to an 8-6-1 record.
