Davenport holds on for title

Tournament MVP Robert Meyerhoff scored 11 of his game-high 27 points in the first quarter Friday, leading host Davenport to a 63-59 boys basketball victory over Laurens in the title game of the Lee Fisher Tournament.

"He played really well," Davenport coach Lee Fisher, the tournament's namesake, said of Meyerhoff, who scored the Wildcats' last five points after spending some time on the bench in foul trouble. "He sat down with four fouls in the third quarter and missed about a full quarter, but when he came back in, it really made the difference for us. They were beating us on the boards and he really helped us."

Davenport led, 39-30, at halftime, but with Meyerhoff out, Laurens cut its deficit to 50-47 after three quarters. Thane Weigl pulled the Leopards to 54-53 on a basket with 2 minutes, 40 seconds left.

Davenport (7-1) called timeout and put Meyerhoff and Kyle Wamsley, who also was in foul trouble, back on the court. A basket by Wamsley made it 56-53 before Meyerhoff clinched it with five straight points.

"They have a very scrappy team," Fisher said of Laurens (1-3). "They do not quit, they just keep coming at you. I think they will pull some surprises in the Tri-Valley League. Weigl and (Mike) VanDeusen are very good players, but their whole squad helps out. Look at their box scores and you see a lot of players with eights and nines (in points)."

Weigl led Laurens with 15 points and fellow all-tournament selection VanDeusen contributed 14 points, eight assists and seven steals.

Mitchell Fisher contributed 12 points and all-tournament pick Troy Palmer scored 11 for Davenport, which is at Gilboa on Jan. 5.

Laurens will play Milford in the first round of its Pat Grasso Tournament on Dec. 29.
