Sidney wrestlers down Unatego, 46-30

David Gannon and Nick Jump earned pins to lead host Sidney to a 46-30 Midstate Athletic Conference dual-meet wrestling victory over Unatego on Thursday.

Gannon needed 3 minutes, 14 seconds to stop Jon Havens at 113 pounds.

Jump pinned Josh Hurlbert in 57 seconds at 170.

Unatego received a 4-3 overtime victory by Nate Wilsey at 160 pounds. Wilsey scored an escape in the extra period to beat Brandon Swislosky, who forced overtime when Wilsey was called for stalling late in regulation.

Sidney (9-9) will compete in the MAC Championships at 10 a.m. Saturday at Deposit.

STAC Championships

Oneonta High seniors James Longo and Kirkland Dolan earned No. 1 seeds for the Southern Tier Athletic Conference Championships, which start at 5 p.m. today at Union-Endicott.

Longo is 28-7 this season as the top seed at 145 pounds. Dolan (30-2) is seeded first at 170 pounds.

Sam Sherrill, a junior who is 24-7, is the third seed at 152 pounds and sophomore Austin Scheer (20-12) is seeded fourth at 160. OHS coach John Nealis said it’s unlikely that Scheer will compete as he’s battling an illness.

The STAC Championships resume at 10 a.m. Saturday.

BOYS SWIMMINGCooperstown 101, S-E 73

Senior Aaron Idelson earned a razor-tight victory in diving to help host Cooperstown to victory on Senior Night.

Idelson finished with a score of 224.75 points to beat longtime rival Ethan Kurth by seven-tenths of a point.

“They’ve been going against each other for four years,” Cooperstown coach Cheryl Rock said.

Ted and Sean Mebust each earned two victories for Cooperstown. Ted Mebust won the 200-yard individual medley (2 minutes, 23.62 seconds) and the 100 backstroke (1:00.92). Sean Mebust placed first in the 50 free (24.61) and the 100 free (53.69).

Cooperstown (8-1) is off until the Section Three Class C meet Feb. 14 at New Hartford. The sectional diving meet take place Feb. 8 at Mexico.

“We’ll pile on the yardage next week (at practice) and then taper,” Rock said.

BOWLINGat Little Falls

Dakota Terrell’s 504 series paced Cooperstown’s boys in a 5-0 loss at Little Falls.

Paige Hewitt and Broc Gilbert each finished with a 331 series for the Hawkeyes’ girls, who also fell, 5-0.
