Hartwick's Lufkin named Empire 8's rookie of the week


Hartwick freshman Joey Lufkin was named the Empire 8 Conference men’s basketball rookie of the week Monday.

It marks the third time this season Lufkin has earned the honor.

A guard, Lufkin had 10 points and four rebounds in Hartwick’s 82-72 loss to visiting Nazareth on Friday. The next day, Lufkin scored his college high of 28 points in the host Hawks’ 77-65 win over St. John Fisher.

Against Fisher, Lufkin shot 9-for-14 from the field, including 5 of 6 from three-point range.

Lufkin is second on the team in scoring at 16.2 points per game. He’s also averaging 2.4 assists and his 43.7 percent accuracy from three-point range ranks in the conference behind Fisher’s Adam Ambielli (44.1).

SWIMMINGCobleskill pair recognized

SUNY Cobleskill’s Tyler Valenti and Alex Steelman were honored by the North Eastern Athletic Conference.

Valenti, a freshman, was named the conference’s male swimmer of the week. He won the 1-meter diving competition in the Vassar College Men’s Sprint Invitational on Saturday. Valenti had a score of 270 points.

Steelman, also a freshman, earned co-female swimmer of the week honors. Like Valenti, Steelman won the 1-meter diving event Saturday at Vassar. She finished with 212.60 points.

It marks the second time this season Steelman has earned NEAC swimmer of the week honors.

Cobleskill will compete NEAC Championships Feb. 14-16 at Cazenovia.

Hawks of the Week

Senior swimmer Clare Nelson and senior men’s basketball player Jared Suderley were named Hartwick College’s Hawks of the Week.

Nelson won two events in Hartwick’s meet at Stevens on Saturday. She placed first in the 100-yard breaststroke in 1 minute, 9.77 seconds and also touched first in the 200 breaststroke in 2:29.19.

Suderley broke Hartwick’s record for all-time rebounds during Hartwick’s 77-65 home win over St. John Fisher on Saturday. He had a game-high 13 rebounds and surpassed 1981 Hartwick graduate Les Miller as the Hawks’ top rebounder. Suderley has 839 rebounds over four seasons with Hartwick.
