Oneonta Legion wins wood bat tournament in Bath

The Daily Star

Oneonta’s Legion baseball team capped a 3-1 weekend with a 13-4 victory over Bath in the championship game of the Randy Naylor Wood-Bat Classic on Sunday at Bath.

Zach Pidgeon and Mark Giallanzo had three hits apiece in the championship game. Pidgeon, who just completed his freshman season at Ithaca, also had three RBIs, and Giallanzo (Mohawk Valley) scored three times.

Winning pitcher Matt Bitzer (2-0) struck out four, walked two and scattered 10 hits in a complete game.

“He settled in (after Bath scored four runs in the second inning),” Oneonta coach Mike Jester said of Bitzer. “He started to get better command of his curveball and he has a decent fastball. He did a really good job.”

David Wright contributed two hits and three RBIs.

Oneonta (6-2) advanced to the title game Sunday with a 13-8 victory over Corning Red.

Zach King’s hit a two-run single in the second inning that ended with the Green Wave leading, 10-4.

Pidgeon had two hits and three RBIs, and Wright and tournament MVP Peter Brunetta had two hits apiece. Giallanzo went 1-for-1, walked three times and scored four runs. Combined Sunday, Giallanzo reached base nine times and scored seven runs.

In pool play Saturday, Oneonta defeated Wayland, 13-3, and fell, 5-4, to Bath.

Against Wayland, left-hander Pidgeon threw a three-hitter that included 11 strikeouts. All the runs Wayland scored were unearned.

“He looked good,” Jester said of Pidgeon. “He had good velocity on his fastball and had much better command of his curveball. In both of his outings this season, he’s looking better each time.”

Wright had three hits and three RBIs, and Ben Moxley, Josh Garufi, King, and Collin Neer had two hits apiece.

In the loss to Bath, Moxley – The Daily Star’s Player of the Year in 2012 – opened with five shutout innings as Oneonta took a 4-0 lead. Brunetta had an RBI double in the second inning and Connor Tavarone contributed a two-run single during a three-run fourth inning.

But Bath scored twice in the sixth inning, two more in the seventh and scored the winning run in the eighth inning on a wild pitch by Bitzer.

Oneonta will play host to Sidney at 6 tonight.
