State-ranked teams highlight field for 25th Cordell

Staff Report

Oneonta High will host the 25th annual Oneonta Rotary-Ross Cordell Wrestling Tournament on Friday and Saturday.

The Yellowjackets will be one of six area teams represented in the tournament, which will begin at 4:15 p.m. Friday with its opening ceremony. Wrestlers from Bainbridge-Guilford/Afton/Harpursville, Delhi, Edmeston, Unadilla Valley and Unatego also will compete in the 17-team event, which will feature several place-winners from past state tournaments.

Chenango Forks, which has won multiple Cordell team titles, will return to a field that includes Carthage, Cobleskill-Richmondville, Elmira, Levittown, Owego, Sandy Creek, Saugerties, Schoharie, Sherburne-Earlville and Susquehanna Valley.

BGAH and C-R highlight the teams in the field as both earned top-20 rankings from the New York State Sports Writers Association last week. BGAH is ranked 10th among small schools in the state, nine spots ahead of Cobleskill-Richmondville.

Wrestling begins at 4:30 p.m. Friday with preliminary rounds, which will be followed by quarterfinals. The tournament continues with wrestlebacks at 8:30 a.m. Saturday. Semifinals are set to start at 9:45 a.m. Saturday, with the championships expected to begin around 3:30 p.m.

Burnt Hills will not return to defend its 2013 team championship. Elmira and Saugerties tied for second last year, when Bainbridge-Guilford/Afton finished fourth.
