Local teams in hunt at Cordell tourney

The opening day of wrestling in the Ross Cordell Rotary Tournament at Oneonta High brought with it five semifinalists apiece for the host school and Unatego, and six for Bainbridge-Guilford/Afton/Harpursville on Friday.

Elmira leads the 16-team tournament, which is celebrating its 25th anniversary, with 65.5 points. That’s a point-and-a-half ahead of Cobleskill-Richmondville and seven better than third-place BGAH. OHS and Unatego are tied for fourth with 47 points.

Edmeston (eight points), Delhi (four) and Unadilla Valley (zero) are also in the field.

The two-day event resumes at 8:45 a.m. Saturday.

The weight class with the most area flavor heading into Saturday is 152. The Yellowjackets’ Sam Sherrill, BGAH’s Jamie Griswold and Unatego’s Lucas DeJoy all advanced to the semifinals, along with C-R’s Zac Cooper.

Cooper, Sherrill and DeJoy earned their spots in the semifinals with pins. Griswold beat Owego’s Devin Horton, 5-0.

Four other weight classes have two area wrestlers still in line to win titles.

At 113, Josh Lindsey of BGAH and Mitchell Spaziani of OHS pinned their quarterfinal opponents in the first period.

Unatego’s Ryan Marszal and Oneonta’s Kirkland Dolan advanced to the semifinals at 170. Marszal earned a 4-2 decision over Carthage’s Bryce Reed. Dolan pinned BGAH’s Colby Foster in 50 seconds.

At 195 pounds, Unatego’s Riley Hanrahan pinned Susquehanna Valley’s Teddy Storti in 1:35 and Edmeston’s Grey Bennis decisioned Tyler Wood of Sandy Creek, 13-0.

BGAH’s Shane Curtin and Unatego’s Bradey Bean advanced at 285. Curtin pinned Oneonta’s Kris Walrath in 3:20 and Bean pinned Saugerties’ Noah vanDerBeck in 3:11.

Others from the area to reach the semifinals are: BGAH’s Chris Cirigliano (106 pounds), Ben Bivar (132) and Madison Hoover (145); Oneonta’s Dalton Ormsby (138) and Austin Scheer (160); and Unatego’s Nate Wilsey (182).

All of the area semifinalists are seeking their first Cordell titles.

Marszal and Cirigliano advanced to the finals last season.

Bennis finished fourth last season.

Last year’s team champion, Burnt Hills, is not in the field.
