Oneonta State men and women get past Oswego

STAFF REPORT

Nine of Zach Mager’s team-high 22 points came in overtime as host Oneonta State earned a 75-69 SUNY Athletic Conference men’s basketball victory over Oswego on Tuesday.

Mager’s three-pointer with 20 seconds left in overtime gave the Red Dragons a 72-67 lead.

O-State (5-5) improved to 2-1 in conference play. Oswego (8-2) is also 2-1 in the conference.

Mager hit a free throw with 36 seconds left in regulation that tied the score at 63.

Trailing, 67-65, after a pair of Dan Ross free throws, Mager tied the score with two free throws before hitting the pair to give Oneonta a 69-67 lead with 2:53 remaining in overtime.

Sophomore Jackson Zuvic scored 15 points for the Red Dragons, who received 10 points apiece from Dan Lee and Mikey McElroy.

Brian Sortino scored 26 points for Oswego.

Oneonta will travel to New Paltz at 4 p.m. Saturday.

WOMEN’S BASKETBALL

Oneonta 66, Oswego 62

Five of senior Alyshia Crawford’s game-high 23 points came in the final 1:25 as Oneonta State earned a SUNY Athletic Conference win at home Tuesday.

Crawford hit a three-pointer with 1:25 left to give O-State the lead for keeps at 64-62. She then sealed the victory on a breakaway layup with 12 seconds left.

The Red Dragons (8-2) are 2-1 in conference play. Oswego (4-6) fell to 0-3 in the SUNYAC.

Crawford hit a three-pointer with 3:26 left to give the Red Dragons a 58-56 lead. Oswego senior Jenn Robbins came right back with a layup to tie the score for a 15th time. Robbins led the Lakers with 22 points.

Grace Schilling scored on a driving layup to put Oneonta ahead, 60-58, before Robbins made a three-pointer to give the Lakers a 61-60 lead with 1:59 left.

A free throw by Schilling and one by Mary Mazella of Oswego kept the Lakers up by one with 1:33 to go, which set the stage for Crawford on the ensuing possession.

Schilling finished with 12 points as did junior Sarah Longto.

Oneonta will play at New Paltz at 2 p.m. Saturday.

HONORS

Men’s Basketball

Hartwick senior Kyle Bradley was named the ECAC Division III Upstate Player of the Week.

Earlier this week, the Empire 8 Conference selected Bradley as its player of the week.

Bradley averaged 23 points in helping Hartwick to a 2-1 week.
