Three Sidney wrestlers, two from Walton and one each from Bainbridge-Guilford/Afton/Harpursville and Unatego won titles during the Dan Wickham Classic on Saturday at Unatego.
Dylan Gifford (152 pounds), Kai Sabada (195) and Austin Dean (285) won their weight classes for Sidney.
Logan Robinson (120) and Dylan Wood (126) earned titles for Walton, which finished fifth in the team standings with 150.5 points.
BGAH’s Jake Andrews (132) and the host school’s Ryan Marszal (170) also won championships.
Saranac won the team title with 241.5 points. Adirondack was second with 223, followed by Cortland with 191.
Unatego finished sixth with 140 points.
Gifford beat Saranac’s James Black in his final, 7-6. Sidney’s other two wins in the finals came by pin. Sabada needed 3:30 to beat Delhi’s Brian Ingram. Dean pinned Adirondack’s Andrew Tanner in 1:10.
Robinson and Wood won their finals by decision. Robinson downed Adirondack’s Ryan O’Rourke in his final. Wood scored an 8-0 victory over BGAH’s Ben Bivar.
Andrews pinned Cortland’s Drew Towers in the 132 final.
Marszal’s final victory came by a 14-4 score over WT Clarke’s Joe Turuno.
Three other area wrestlers – Unatego’s Lucas DeJoy, Walton’s Dawson Beers and Unadilla Valley’s Alex Avolio – lost in the finals.
DeJoy fell to Hoosick Falls’ Colby Davedonis, 7-3, at 145 pounds. Mike Southwick of Cortland down Beers, 6-0, at 160 and Avolio was pinned in 5:11 by Saranac’s Paul Herrara.
Central N.Y. tourney
In addition to sending wrestlers to the Wickham Classic, BGAH also sent some to the Central New York Tournament at Vernon-Vernona-Sherrill.
Two of them – Chris Cirigliano and Jamie Griswold – won titles.
Cirigliano defeated Mexico’s Theo Powers, 8-1, in the 106-pound final. Griswold’s 145-pound title match ended with a 4-3 victory over Central Valley’s John Mazza.
Kevin Hubbard and Austin Carr contributed third-place finishes at 126 and 132, respectively, for BGAH.
at Galaxy Bowl
Bryant Gray and Zach Wood rolled series of 690 and 671, respectively, to lead Sidney to a 4-0 Midstate Athletic Conference victory over Bainbridge-Guilford on Friday.
Gray’s series included a 258 game and Wood rolled a match-high 276 game.
Matt Feyh had a 221 game to lead Bainbridge-Guilford.
B-G’s girls earned a 3-1 win over Sidney. Morgan Dean rolled a 214 game to lead the Bobcats.
Marina Mazzarella had a 201 game as part of her 572 series for Sidney.
Southern Tier Invitational
Sidney’s Dean Howard and Oneonta High’s Mat Robinson earned top-five finishes Friday during the Southern Tier Invitational at Cornell University.
Howard placed third in the 600-meter run, crossing in 1 minute, 27.06 seconds. Robinson took fourth in the high jump, at 5-foot-10.
Sidney’s Jilleen Livingston had the best placing among area girls, clearing 4-8 in the high jump for eighth. Missy Emilio’s 10th in the 600 marked a program record for OHS as she finished in 1:44.40.
The next indoor track event of the season is the Hurley-Quinney Invitational, which runs Friday for small schools and Saturday for large schools at Cornell.
