O-State's Roth named top field athlete in region

Oneonta State junior J.D. Roth was selected as the NCAA Division III Atlantic Region Male Indoor Field Athlete of the Year on Wednesday.

Roth and teammates Patrick Weinert (Schenevus), Joe Carr and Jake Alviene are headed to Lincoln, Neb., this weekend to compete in the NCAA Division III Indoor Track and Field Championships at the University of Nebraska.

Roth is the first field athlete in men’s program history to earn the honor. Previously, Eric Theiss and Sean Bernstein were selected as the Track Athlete of the Year in the Region.

“I am proud of what J.D. has accomplished this season,” O-State coach Angelo Posillico said in a media release sent by the school. “He is always pushing himself to be the best that he can be. It helps that he has Patrick to push him and together the two have given us the best 1-2 punch in Division III.”

Roth will compete this weekend in the weight throw, an event for which he’s seeded sixth, and the shot put (seventh seed).

Roth won the SUNY Athletic Conference title in the weight throw and finished runner-up in the same event last weekend in the ECAC meet. He was third in the shot put at both championships. He holds school records in both events with distances of 55 feet, 10 ¼ inches in the shot and 61-11 in the weight throw.

Also this weekend, Weinert will compete in the weight throw, Carr in the 60 meters and Alviene in the 60 hurdles.

Carr and Alviene were part of O-State’s 400 relay team that won an outdoor national title last spring.

“We knew coming into this season we had a lot of shoes to fill from last year’s outdoor team,” Posillico said. “These four men are competing with a lot of confidence right now and have shown before that they can succeed on a big stage. Their hard work is paying off as our five entries will make SUNY Oneonta one of the most represented teams at the national championships.”
