Oneonta State’s softball team made short work of two opponents Thursday with a pair of mercy-rule victories during the Gene Cusic Collegiate Classic in Fort Myers, Fla.
Catcher Brianna Rivera went 2-for-2 with a triple, a double, two RBIs and two runs to lead the Red Dragons to a 10-0 rout of Rockford University in five innings.
Designated hitter Traci Lichtenstein contributed a run and an RBI in a 3-for-3 effort for O-State (4-2), which received two hits apiece from second baseman Jamie Whittam (run, RBI), first baseman Nicole Marzillo (two runs, RBI), center fielder Katie O’Gorman (run, RBI) and shortstop Marlene Cuevas (two runs).
Oneonta finished with 15 hits and scored in each of its four at-bats, including a four-run fourth inning that gave the Red Dragons a 10-0 lead.
Reliever Anna Husain held Rockford (2-6) scoreless in the top of the fifth inning to end it. She struck out two and allowed two hits in her only inning.
Starting pitcher Rachel Hitt (2-1) scattered five hits, struck out four and walked two in four innings. She also hit a batter.
The Red Dragons roughed up Rockford starter Brittany Bura (0-4) for nine earned runs on 14 hits and a walk in three innings.
O-State opened its first day of competition at the Classic with a 20-0 thumping of Mount Mary University in five innings. Statistics were not available at press time.
The Red Dragons continue play in the Classic at 1 p.m. today against Curry College. They’ll also face Nichols College at 3 p.m. today.
O-State will then play back-to-back doubleheaders on Saturday and Sunday. The Red Dragons will face UMass-Dartmouth at 9 a.m. Saturday, followed by an 11 a.m. game against the University of Pittsburgh at Bradford. On Sunday, Oneonta meets Clarkson University at 9 a.m., then closes with an 11 a.m. game against the College of Wooster at 11 a.m.
