Hawks' Lufkin earns another rookie honor

Hartwick College freshman guard Joey Lufkin is one tough rookie.

Lufkin earned his second rookie of the year honor for the 2013-14 men’s basketball season Monday, when announced its All-East Region team.

Lufkin averaged 15.8 points and appeared in all 28 games for Hartwick, which reached the NCAA Division III Tournament after winning the Empire 8 Conference Tournament title. The E8’s Rookie of the Year, Lufkin finished sixth overall and first among freshmen in conference scoring. Additionally, his 38.7-percent shooting from beyond the three-point arc ranked fourth in the E8. also placed Hartwick senior forward Jared Suderley on its All-East Region First Team. The reigning E8 Player of the Year averaged 20.4 points and 10.7 rebounds this season, when he set program records for all-time points and rebounds.

Suderley started every game this season, scoring in double figures each time and amassing 16 double-doubles. The E8 Tournament MVP ranked 16th in total points, 15th in total rebounds, 23rd in rebounds per game and 12th in double-doubles among NCAA Division III players this season.

Suderley also made the All-East Region First Team after the 2011-12 season and was the 2010-11 Rookie of the Year.


Hartwick forward honored

Hartwick sophomore forward Brittney Dumas made’s All-East Region Second Team for the 2013-2014 season.

Empire 8 Conference first-teamer Dumas had team-highs of 16.5 points and 10.6 rebounds per game. She also led the Hawks in field-goal percentage (.454) and blocked shots (24).

Dumas finished first in E8 double-doubles with 18 in 28 games, which ranks 10th among NCAA D-III players. She also ranked second in the E8 in field-goal percentage, points per game and rebounds per game for the Hawks, who reached the second round of the NCAA D-III Tournament after receiving an at-large berth.

Dumas has 895 points and 488 rebounds in two seasons at Hartwick.


Hartwick 17, Cobleskill 2

Cody Ciolino finished with four goals and four assists to lead host Hartwick to a non-conference rout of SUNY Cobleskill.

Cody Petillo, Mike Vaglica and Roy Simmons contributed three goals apiece for the Hawks (1-4), who took a 13-0 lead into halftime.

Brendan Dieck, Zach Gropper, Connor Long and Adam Goss also scored for Hartwick, which received two saves from starting goalie Michael Rourke.

Tom Twentyman and Max Sprauer scored for the Fighting Tigers (0-5), who were outshot, 51-20.

Hartwick visits Utica on Saturday in the Empire 8 opener for both teams.

Cobleskill is off until March 29, when it travels to Wells.


Athlete of the week

Cobleskill selected freshman sprinter Winston Lee as its athlete of the week Monday.

Lee made program history Saturday as the Fighting Tigers first athlete to earn NCAA All-American honors. Lee placed fifth in the 60-meter dash during the NCAA Division III Indoor Track Championships at the University of Nebraska’s Bob Devaney Sports Center, crossing in 6.81 seconds.
