Oneonta High’s Mariah Ruff and Franklin’s Jordan Beers were named their classes’ players of the year in Section Four, and their coaches, Matt Miller and Mike Dutcher, respectively, earned coach of the year honors by the Basketball Coaches Association of New York.
Ruff and Miller were named the Section Four’s best in Class B. Beers and Dutcher did likewise in Class D.
In boys basketball, BCANY selected Franklin’s Derek Beers, Jordan’s younger brother, as the section’s Class D player of the Year. The coach of the year award was split by Edmeston’s Darren Belden and South Kortright’s Bob VanValkeburgh.
Also on the boys side, Oneonta sophomore Albert Odero, Unadilla Valley sophomore David Dufresne and Unatego junior Tanner Winchester were selected to the 15-man Section Four all-star team.
Ruff, a senior who was named Miss Basketball in New York by BCANY last week, capped off a stellar four-year run in a Yellowjackets uniform by leading OHS to its seventh straight sectional title this past season.
The St. Bonaventure-bound guard averaged 20.0 points in leading the Yellowjackets to an 18-3 season that ended with a 50-44 state quarterfinal loss to eventual state champion Utica Notre Dame.
Between soccer and basketball, Ruff played eight seasons of varsity athletics for the Yellowjackets, who made it to the sectional final in all eight seasons, winning seven of them. In soccer, Ruff helped OHS to three sectional titles and two trips to the state finals, including the program’s first state title this past fall when the Yellowjackets beat Marcellus, 2-1, in the title game. Ruff earned co-Class B player of the Year honors with teammate Taryn More.
On the basketball court, Ruff scored 1,429 points in an OHS uniform, second all-time in school history behind Krissy Zeh, who graduated in 1999 with 1,698 points. All told over six varsity seasons – the first two at Andes – Ruff scored 1,932 points.
