Hartwick women's lacrosse loses at Elmira


Ali Sisco and Lauren Rosenberg scored five goals apiece, but visiting Hartwick College lost, 16-15, to Elmira College on Friday in an Empire 8 Conference women’s lacrosse game.

Hartwick (4-6, 0-2) led, 15-13, before the Soaring Eagles (4-4, 1-1) scored the final three goals. Moorea Spoljaric scored the winner on a free-position shot with 25 seconds left.

Sisco’s fifth goal gave the Hawks a 15-13 lead with 11:50 to play.

Kesley Quail’s goal cut Elmira’s deficit to 15-14 with 5:44 left and Marissa Mongillo tied the score on her fourth goal of the game a minute later.

With about 2 1/2 minutes left, Hartwick’s Emily Jweid had two looks at the goal, but Leanna Pressler made saves on both of them.

Hartwick scored on 15 of its 24 shots. Elmira held a 35-24 advantage in shots and had slim margins in groundballs (18-17) and faceoffs (18-17).

Jweid contributed two goals for the Hawks, who will travel to Utica at 1 p.m. Saturday.

Liam Brown earned a 6-4, 6-2 victory over Luke Snyder at third singles, but Hartwick lost in a non-conference match at Hilton Head, S.C.

The Hawks (0-3) will travel to Elmira College at 4 p.m. Tuesday.
