Bernstein leads O-State track in Virginia

Senior Sean Bernstein won the 100- and 200-meter dashes in impressive times, and J.D. Roth and Schenevus graduate Patrick Weinert broke school records to lead Oneonta State at the Division III Commonwealth Duals on Saturday at Lynchburg, Va.

Bernstein, the defending NCAA Division III outdoor champion in the 200, won the 100 in 10.65 seconds and crossed in 21.35 in the 200. His 100 time set a meet record and is the second-fastest time by a D-III runner this season. Bernstein’s 200 time is the fastest in D-III thus far.

Bernstein’s teammate, freshman Joe Carr, wasn’t far behind Bernstein. He finished third in the 100 in 10.99 and second in the 200 in 22.06.

Roth set school records in the hammer throw and the shot put. His hammer throw of 173 feet, 2 inches broke Weinert’s school record by 11 feet. It’s also 14th best in D-III this season. Roth put the shot 48-8.

Weinert broke the school record in the discus with a throw of 140-10.

Sophomore Mike Didas and senior Chris Harvey also won events. Didas won the 5,000 in 15:40 and Harvey placed first in the 3,000, crossing in 9:41.46. The Red Dragons went 4-0.

Oneonta’s women went 3-1.

Junior Kaitlyn Brandt won two individual events and helped the Red Dragons’ 400 relay team to victory.

Brandt ran meet-record times in winning the 100 (12.47) and the 200 (25.98). She also teamed with Kacy Boburka, Brittany Cocchieri and Shana Ventresca to win the 400 relay in a meet-record 49.73.

Senior Kate Parsons set a meet-record in the hammer with a distance of 147-7. Classmate Carolyn Nasr won the 800 in 2:23.22, which was also a meet record.

Junior Danielle Kennedy broke her school record in the 5,000 finishing in a meet- and track-record time of 17:35.12. Junior Allison Ryley contributed a meet-record time in the 3,000 steeplechase, crossing in 11:43.11.

O-State will compete in the Cortland State Invitational on Saturday.

MEN’S LACROSSE

Delhi 13, Monroe 11

David Fernandes scored four goals Saturday to lead SUNY Delhi to victory at Hartwick College.

Jake Guy, Brendan Caoili and Jordan Owen contributed two goals apiece for the seventh-ranked Broncos, who outscored No. 5 Monroe, 4-2, in the fourth quarter.

Devlin Clarke finished with four assists for Delhi (5-2), which held advantages of 60-35 in shots and 44-27 in groundballs.

HONORS

Hawks of the Week

Junior lacrosse midfielder Mike Vaglica and freshman equestrian rider Cecilia Campala were named Hartwick’s Hawks of the Week.

Vaglica had a goal and two assists against Castleton State and then scored three goals and had two assists versus St. John Fisher. For the season, he has 11 goals and 12 assists.

Campala’s second-place finish in intermediate fences Saturday at Saratoga Springs earned her a spot in this Saturday’s Zone II finals.
