Sidney freshman no-hits Walton in softball

Staff Report

Little sis is catching up.

Freshman pitcher Kailyn Gravel struck out 13 in a five-inning no-hitter Wednesday, leading visiting Sidney to a 15-0 softball victory over Midstate Athletic Conference rival Walton.

“She’s come a long way from last year,” Sidney coach Mike Brazee said of Gravel, who threw on a limited basis as a eighth-grade varsity player. “We’re very pleased.”

Gravel’s older sister, Danielle, is in her junior season as a pitcher for Division III Keuka College. Danielle Gravel graduated from Sidney in 2010 with three no-hitters, including a perfect game as a junior. Her other no-hitters came as a senior.

Kailyn Gravel’s no-no included six walks and one error by Sidney, which scored six runs in the first inning and seven in the fifth.

Jolene Krom homered and Karissa Lambrecht tripled, singled twice and drove in three runs for Sidney (1-1), which plays a non-leaguer at Johnson City at 3 p.m. Saturday.
