Oneonta State gave up a goal in the 33rd minute Sunday and failed to recover as third-ranked host William Smith College earned a 1-0 women’s soccer victory in the second round of the NCAA Division III Tournament.
The Red Dragons advanced to the second round with a 1-0 defeat of Farmingdale State on Saturday, when Oneonta State’s men dropped out of their NCAA D-III Tournament with a 2-0 loss to Oberlin College.
The Herons took advantage of an Oneonta miscue to set up the decisive goal in Sunday’s second-round NCAA women’s game.
Red Dragons goalie Rori Stark drew a whistle when she handled a backwards pass from a defender, giving William Smith an indirect free kick inside the 6-yard box. Shay Callahan then passed to the top of the box, where MaryClaire Pelletier beat Stark to the top-left corner for a 1-0 lead 32:45 into the match.
The Herons (19-1) also beat Stark earlier in the game, but an offsides call erased the goal.
Elise Moinzadeh just missed tying the score with 23:21 left. After racing into the box with a half-step on a defender, Moinzadeh sent a shot from the middle into the side netting of the left post.
Stark made five saves for the Red Dragons (13-5-3), who also had two defensive saves.
Chelsea Dunay stopped two shots for the Herons, who earned their 17th shutout of the season.
William Smith, which advanced to the second round with a 5-0 rout of Cabrini on Saturday, finished with advantages of 20-3 in shots and 6-3 in corner kicks.
O-State fell to 1-4-1 against the Herons over the past decade. The Red Dragons also fell, 2-1, to William Smith in the third round of the 2010 NCAA D-III Tournament.
