Morris girls start season with victory

Alexis Richards scored nine of her game-high 11 points in the second half and Haley Wist finished with a double-double to lead host Morris to a 38-26 non-league victory over Davenport in the season opener for both teams Thursday.

Wist amassed 12 rebounds and 10 points. Eight of her points came in the first half, which ended with the Mustangs of the Tri-Valley League ahead, 21-14.

Sarah Haight had 11 points, two three-point field goals and six steals to pace Delaware League-affiliate Davenport, which received 11 rebounds from Jenna Lutz.

Morris hosts a non-league game against Ostelic Valley on Monday.

Milford 42, Hancock 37

Maddy Zenir scored 11 points and grabbed a team-high 11 rebounds to lead host Milford to a victory in the opening round of the Anton Remy Tournament.

Mataiah Waters hit the go-ahead basket, a 17-foot jumper that gave Milford the 39-37 lead, with less than two minutes left.

Serena Chase then made two free throws and Sadie Hogan hit another for the Wildcats, who took a 19-15 lead into halftime.

“It was a hard-fought battle,” Milford coach Jim Weir said.

Milford also received team-highs of 12 points and eight steals from Addy Lawson, helping the Wildcats advance to Saturday’s championship game. Milford will face the winner of tonight’s other first-round game between Cherry-Valley Springfield and Harpursville.

Jessica Worzel scored a game-high 15 points for Hancock.
