Hartwick volleyball goes distance for win

Hartwick College outscored visiting Utica, 15-4, in the fifth and deciding game Friday as the host Hawks earned a volleyball victory in their Empire 8 Conference Crossover opener.

Sophomore Taylor Vonasek finished with a match-high 15 kills -- her top performance at the college level -- to pace Hartwick in its 21-25, 25-17, 23-25, 25-23, 15-4 triumph.

Classmate Hannah Strom contributed 13 kills, 10 digs and five aces for the Hawks (3-11), who received nine kills from freshman Ashlynn Mohan.

Quincy Kinzel also had a college-best performance with 40 assists and Christina Vitale finished with 17 digs for Hartwick, which hosts E8 crossovers against Nazareth and Ithaca on Saturday.

Brandi Blaszak’s 12 kills paced Utica (4-7), which got 11 kills from Cassandra Manzer and a match-high 18 digs from Briona Enny.


O-State 9, Oswego 0

Brynn Sussman’s 6-0, 6-1 sweep of Oswego’s Nicole Leader at first singles led Oneonta State to a SUNY Athletic Conference rout on the road.

Sussman also teamed with Lauren Skolnick for an 8-0 triumph at first doubles for the Red Dragons (5-2), who visit Hartwick on Thursday.


O-State to host clinic

The ninth annual Oneonta State Alumni Wrestling Clinic will run from noon-2 p.m. Saturday at the Chase Physical Education Gymnasium.

Former O-State standout Josh Wake will be the featured guest for the developmental clinic, which is open to wrestlers of all skill levels. Wake is an NCAA Division III All-American who earned three all-state honors and three NCAA Scholar All-American accolades in college.
