Schenevus girls edge Franklin, 2-1

Schenevus took advantage of an own goal and seven saves from Mary Hernandez to pull off a 2-1 girls soccer upset of 2012 co-Section Four champion Franklin on Friday in the Tri-Valley League.

The Dragons took a 1-0 lead 30 seconds into the game on a play that started with a 35-yard free kick by Kassie Jeffers. The ball landed around the 12-yard mark, where a Franklin defender deflected it into the goal.

Schenevus (4-2, 4-2) rode its 1-0 cushion into the second half, then made it 2-0 with 22:40 left as Sarah Mellor turned a pass from Taylor Bookhout into a goal to the far post from seven yards away.

Jordan Beers cut Franklin’s deficit in half with 7:27 remaining, following her own shot for a rebound goal.

“Gritty win,” said Schenevus coach Chris Kaltenbach, whose team was outshot, 14-8.

Marisa Cawley had seven saves for Franklin (4-1), which tied Morris, 1-1, in the 2012 Section Four Class D title game and advanced to the state tournament via a penalty-kick round.

Mary Hernandez stopped seven shots for Schenevus, which visits Richfield Springs on Saturday.

Milford 1, Morris 0

Hannah Saggese scored 1:45 into the second half and Milford held on for a Tri-Valley League road victory over defending co-Section Four Class D champion Morris.

Saggese beat Morris goalie Kaylyn Oliver (five saves) on a shot from halfway between midfield and the 18-yard line. Her high ball found a corner for the go-ahead goal.

“It was a well-played game for both teams,” said Morris coach Rhoda Flint, whose team played Milford to a scoreless tie in the T-V championship game last season before tying Franklin, 1-1, in the Section Four final. Franklin advanced to the state tournament by winning a penalty-kick shootout.

Rukiye Henderson made seven saves in the shutout for the Wildcats, who matched Morris with eight shots.

The Mustangs (4-1-1) play South Kortright at 10 a.m. Saturday in the first round of the Chic Walshe Tournament at Davenport.

G-MU 3, Worcester 0

Taylor Nichols scored two goals in the first half to lead visiting Gilbertsville-Mount Upton to a Tri-Valley League victory.

Elaina Palada scored in the second half for the Raiders, who received two saves from Lexus Coughlin for the shutout.

Kerrin O’Shaughnessy had six saves for Worcester (1-3-1, 1-3-1), which faces host Davenport in the Chic Walshe Tournament on Saturday.

CV-S 4, Laurens 0

Jordan Loucks and Lauren Loucks each finished with a goal and an assist as Cherry Valley-Springfield rolled to a Tri-Valley League victory.

Olivia Preston and Jordan Zaccagnino also scored for the Patriots, who received two saves from Kylie Graham in the shutout.

Laurens (1-5-1, 1-5-1) plays Milford on Tuesday.


Oneonta 209, Windsor 69

Lucy Bischoff and Madison Beckemeyer won two events apiece as visiting Oneonta High cruised to a Southern Tier Athletic Conference victory.

Bischoff touched first in the 200-yard freestyle (2:15.78) and the 100 butterfly (1:13.96). She also swam the lead leg for the victorious 400 free relay squad (4:26.98), which featured Beckemeyer, Abby M. Miller and Madison Allen, and anchored the winning 200 free relay team (1:55.07). Bischoff followed Sarah Brackett, Christina Sakoulas and Ceili Getman in the latter.

Beckemeyer contributed wins in the 200 individual medley (2:39.75) and the 500 free (6:13.0) for the Yellowjackets (3-1, 3-1), who host Greene on Wednesday.


Unatego 3, Delhi 2

Leanne Mckee had seven aces and Mariah LeVeille finished with six for Unatego, which rallied for a MAC victory at home.

Brianna Hoefer and Hannah Bohacek contributed four aces apiece for the Spartans, who came back from a 25-14 loss in the first game. Unatego won the next two, 25-28 and 25-23, before Delhi tied it with a 25-21 win in the fourth game. The Spartans (3-3) then secured the victory with a 25-15 advantage in the final game.

Sierra Bedient amassed match-bests of 17 aces and nine assists for the Bulldogs (1-6), who got 11 digs from Kayla Cappiello and seven kills from Lorlyn Kilmer.

Delhi visits Greene on Tuesday. Unatego hosts Walton on Monday.

UV 3, Greene 1

Shannon McIntyre had seven aces, four kills and four assists to lead host Unadilla Valley to its fourth straight victory, 25-20, 20-25, 25-21, 25-10.

Megan Gould had 10 aces and four kills for the Storm, (6-1, 6-1), which visits Walton on Tuesday.

Kayli Dickinson paced Greene with 11 assists and six aces.


Afton 3, Walton 1

Bailey Sherman made a shot off a penalty corner five minutes into play and Karli Conpropst converted a pass from Madison Baciuska a minute later to lead host Afton to a Section Four Division II victory.

Conpropst also scored in the second half for the Crimson Knights (4-2, 3-0), who finished with advantages of 22-2 in shots and 15-3 in penalty corners.

Kiley Lamoreaux scored with 12 minutes left for the Warriors (1-5, 0-3), who visit Hancock on Tuesday.
