OHS boys sweep Owego, 2-1

Staff Report

Zach Joseph scored the go-ahead goal with three minutes left Monday, helping the Oneonta High boys soccer team to a 2-1 victory and a regular-season Southern Tier Athletic Conference sweep of visiting Owego at the Wright National Soccer Campus.

Kragh Delello opened the scoring seven minutes into the match, pouncing on a throughball from Ian Oliver and finishing from inside the box.

“He took it on his left, pushed it to his right and scored,” said OHS coach Alex Brannan, whose Jackets beat the Indians, 3-1, on the road Sept. 4.

Owego’s Kyle Pryor tied it with eight minutes remaining in the first half, converting a cross from Joey Renda. Winning goalie Jeremy Leary (seven saves) tipped Renda’s pass, but Pryor was there to redirect it into the net.

Joseph’s second-half goal beat David Ackerman (three saves) to secure the victory for OHS (6-1, 6-1), which was outshot, 11-7.

The Jackets visit Chenango Forks on Wednesday.

Davenport 1, CV-S 0

Travis Briggs scored off a throw-in during the first half, leading Davenport to a non-league victory at home.

“He threw it in front of the goal from the sideline and it went in off a defender,” Davenport coach Deb Moorby said. “He has a very good throw. It’s really like a corner kick.”

Moorby said Davenport paid special attention to Cherry Valley-Springfield’s Wyatt Crowley and Ben Drugatz to help limit the Patriots’ scoring opportunities.

“Crowley’s plays in the middle of the field and he’s a very strong player,” said Moorby, who marked Crowley with her son, Kyle, and Cody Wamsley. “He throws their balls in and takes their kicks. And Drugatz is a very good player, too, so we just tried to keep somebody on him all the time.”

Jeremy Pickett made three saves for CV-S (6-1), which finished with advantages of 10-7 in shots and 8-2 in corner kicks.
