Red Dragons shut out Hawks in tennis

Staff Report

Oneonta State left no question Thursday as to who has the better college women’s tennis team in the area this season.

Brynn Sussman won at first singles and teamed with Lauren Skolnick for a victory at first doubles as the Red Dragons thumped host Hartwick College, 9-0, in a non-conference match.

Sussman and Skolnick started a doubles sweep for Oneonta (6-2) with an 8-2 win over Ruthie Jones and Nicole Schepisi.

Emily Maggiore and Colette Lankowicz won at second doubles, as did Oneonta teammates Abigail Smith and Kelly Gochan at third doubles.

Brynn Sussman then outlasted Jones at first singles, 6-3, 1-6, 10-8, marking one of three singles matches that required third-set tiebreakers to determine the winner. The other two were Maggiore’s 7-5, 3-6, 10-2 defeat of Schepisi at second singles, and Riane Reithel’s 6-2, 6-7, 10-8 win over Lauren Noyes at sixth singles.

Lankowicz (third singles), Michelle Spencer (fourth singles) and Jenna Conklin (fifth singles) won their matches in straight sets for the Red Dragons, who host Farmingdale State at 1 p.m. Saturday. Conklin’s 6-0, 6-3 defeat of Caitlin O’Brien marked her first college victory.

The Hawks (4-6) host Wells College at noon Sunday.

Herkimer 3, Delhi 0

Raven Worthing had nine digs and five kills for SUNY Delhi in a 25-19, 25-11, 25-21 Mountain Valley Conference loss Wednesday night at Herkimer County Community College.

Hailie Chandler contributes five kills and two blocks for the Broncos (5-8, 2-2 MVC), who received seven assists, three kills and two blocks from Casey Haughney.

Delhi will compete in Region III POD matches at Broome Community College this weekend. Hudson Valley, SUNY Adirondack and Columbia-Greene will also participate. The Broncos will enter POD play with a 2-5 record against Region III teams.
