Sophomore Sean Vinberg and freshman Zachary Southworth scored their first goals of the season Friday, leading Oneonta State to a 2-0 victory at Buffalo State that clinched the SUNY Athletic Conference’s regular-season title for the Red Dragons.
“It was a solid win against a much improved Buffalo State team,” said O-State coach Iain Byrne, whose team has had at least a share of the SUNYAC regular-season crown for the last four seasons. “Earning the home field for the conference tournament will be a big advantage for us.”
The two-time defending SUNYAC Tournament champions will have home-field advantage throughout this year’s conference tournament, which begins Nov. 2 with first-round games.
Vincent Pellegrino made three saves for his third shutout of the season for the Red Dragons (10-3-4, 6-0-2), who took a 1-0 lead in the fourth minute of Friday’s game. Vinberg headed in the opening goal after a corner kick skipped off the head of classmate Jared Van Brunt.
Sophomore Jake Sutherland set up Southworth’s goal to the near corner in the 22nd minute.
Oneonta finished with advantages of 15-8 in shots and 10-2 in corner kicks. The Red Dragons will close their regular season at 1 p.m. Saturday at Fredonia.
O-State 2, Buffalo State 0
Kayla Ceschini and Jessica Lyden scored in the first and second halves, respectively, to lead Oneonta State to a SUNYAC victory at home.
Ceschini opened the scoring 21:19 into the match, after Karly DeSimone drew a foul from about 25 yards out and drove a direct kick from the right side of the field to the far post. Ceschini then one-timed the serve past Bengals goalie Linda Banfield (four saves).
Ceschini set up the insurance goal, which came in the 81st minute. She broke down the left wing and sent the ball across the middle to Jessica Lyden, who scored on a left-footer.
The Red Dragons (8-4-3, 5-0-3) finished with a 12-3 advantage in shots over Buffalo State (11-5-1, 6-2). Kelley Murphy made three saves in the shutout for Oneonta, which hosts Fredonia at 1 p.m. Saturday.
Hartwick Fast Track
Hartwick College freshman Victoria Hathaway earned her second straight victory, but the Hawks’ women fell to Oneonta State during the annual Hartwick Fast Track races on the Elmore Field track.
Hathaway finished the 3-kilometer women’s race in 10:45.10, 17.5 seconds ahead of Oneonta State’s Rachael Shine. O-State teammates Jaclyn Masucci (11:11.50), Sarah Cottone (11:17.70) and Deirdre Davis (11:18.10) rounded out the top five, helping the Red Dragons to a 20-43 team triumph.
O-State’s men earned a 21-40 victory with the help of a 1-2 sweep from David Bohunicky (9:05.10) and Anthony Lupia (9:06.10). Chris Popovici of the Syracuse Chargers placed third in 9:07.00. Hartwick’s Matt Loignon (9:09.30) and Ethan Kelly (9:10.90) followed.
The Hawks will compete in the Empire 8 Conference Championships on Nov. 2 in Saratoga Springs.
