O-State softball sweeps Geneseo in SUNYAC

Oneonta State extended its softball winning streak to seven games with a doubleheader sweep of host Geneseo on Thursday as the Red Dragons opened SUNY Athletic Conference play with 5-1 and 9-2 victories.

Marlene Cuevas went 2-for-2 with two runs and two walks in the opener for Oneonta (11-3). She doubled with two out in the second inning and scored the first run on an RBI single by Brianna Calby. Cuevas made it 2-0 in the fifth when Jenn Brocco drew a bases-loaded walk. Another bases-loaded walk to Traci Lichtenstein plated Jamie Whittam in the fifth for a 3-0 edge.

Lichtenstein capped the scoring with a two-run double in the seventh.

Sabrina DeAngelis (6-1) struck out five in a four-hitter against Geneseo (3-7), which scored in the sixth.

Oneonta jumped to a 4-0 lead in the second game. Whittam homered in the first before O-State scored three times in the second as Nichole Paolino hit a two-run double and Brianna Rivera had an RBI single.

Brocco doubled in two of Oneonta’s three runs in the fourth to make it 6-2 for the Red Dragons, who got three hits from Kristyn Neroda and two apiece from Brocco, Whittam and Katie O’Gorman.

Katie O’Flynn struck out three in 4 1/3 innings for her first pitching win of the season.

Oneonta hosts Cortland State at 3 p.m. today.

Cobleskill drops two

SUNY Cobleskill dropped a non-conference doubleheader to open its season Wednesday as host Sage followed an 8-3 victory with a 9-0 win in five innings.

Madeline DeMilio went 2-for-3 with two stolen bases and a run in the first game for Cobleskill (0-2), which finished with three hits.

Julia Lull doubled in the second game for the Fighting Tigers, who gave up six runs in the first inning and were two-hit by the Gators (11-7).

Cobleskill hosts a North Eastern Athletic Conference doubleheader against Wells College at 1 p.m. Saturday.
