Afton stuns Hancock in baseball, 7-6

Staff Report

Jesse Dedman’s RBI single capped a three-run seventh inning as host Afton defeated four-time defending Section Four Class D baseball champion Hancock, 7-6, in a Midstate Athletic Conference game Thursday.

“It was huge,” Afton coach Ron Rapp said of a Hancock team that advanced to the Class D state final last season. “That’s the first time I’ve beaten (coach) Brandon (Olbrys) since he’s been at Hancock. He’s a great coach and he keeps those kids hopping. It’s been a tough run for me aqainst him.”

Connor Graven-Briggs led off Afton’s seventh with a double. Caleb Stevens followed with a single to the left side of the infield that left runners on first and second.

After a strikeout, Matt Olin walked to load the bases. Josh Austin followed with a flyball to center that was dropped as two runs scored to tie it at 5. Dedman then singled to center to score Olin with the winning run.

Stevens and Richard Langstaff had two hits apiece for the Crimson Knights (2-0), who will travel to Greene on Monday.

Zach Worobey and Ryan Tooley each had two hits for Hancock (1-1).

Sidney 15, Walton 0

Winning pitcher Brandon Bessett struck out six, walked none and scattered three hits in six innings to lead Sidney to a Midstate Athletic Conference victory at Walton.

“Brandon threw very well,” said Sidney coach Kyle Vibbard, whose team batted second in a game originally scheduled to be played at Sidney. “He was all over the strike zone. He pounded the strike zone.”

Bessett also went 3-for-3 with three runs and three RBIs for Sidney (1-1, 1-0), which received two hits apiece from Bill Kozak (four RBIs) and Patrick Vibbard (three RBIs).

Sidney hosts Unadilla Valley on Monday at Field 6 in Oneonta’s Neahwa Park.
