Cassidy Phillips struck out five and walked two in a one-hitter as 2013 Class D state finalist Afton opened the season with a MAC rout of visiting Hancock.
The Crimson Knights scored 11 times in the third inning en route to a five-inning victory via the 15-run rule.
Sierra Palmatier tripled, homered and drove in five runs in a 3-for-4 effort for Afton. Her three-run homer to left field with none out in the fifth ended the game.
“That was over the left-field fence by a mile,” Afton coach Cindy Bostelman said. “It was a big hit.”
Ashley Rogalski (3-for-4), Shakari Coss (2-for-4) and Payton Cutting (2-for-4) had two RBIs apiece for Afton, which visits Greene on Monday.
Kylee Letosky singled in the third for Hancock.
Sidney 20, Walton 7
Jenna McDonald homered to lead off the fourth inning and Jolene Krom doubled twice as Sidney opened its season with a MAC win at home.
Nicole Smith went 4-for-5 with four RBIs for Sidney, which received three RBIs from Krom. Teammate Connor Decker contributed four hits and two RBIs.
Kailyn Gravel struck out 10 in a one-hitter, giving up an RBI single to Taylor Vernooy in the second. Gravel also walked 11 batters and hit five others.
Schenevus 9, Worcester 2
Vicky Hubbard had three hits and Sierra Bentley drove in three runs as Schenevus earned a Tri-Valley League win at home.
Bentley doubled and singled for the Dragons (1-2, 1-1), who got two hits from Stephanie Pepaj.
Winning pitcher Dani Tefft struck out four and walked five in 4 1/3 innings. She allowed one hit before Sarah Mellor closed the victory with 2 2/3 of hitless relief.
Alyssa Branigan had an RBI single in the third for Worcester, which committed seven errors.
Schenevus hosts Cherry Valley-Springfield at 4:30 p.m. Monday.
