Cherry Valley-Springfield’s softball team kicked off its season with a 10-8 non-league victory at Sharon Springs on Friday, the lone high school event involving area teams that was completed.

“It was rainy and it was cold,” CV-S coach Tom Brigham said of his team’s opener, which was called after six innings because of rain.

The Patriots scored five times in the sixth inning to take a 10-5 lead. They benefited from five walks and an error in the inning. Shannon Sears capped the inning with an RBI single.

Sharon Springs rallied for three runs in the bottom of the inning. With the tying runs on base and two outs, winning pitcher Chelsea Zembower induced a popout to second to end it.

Sears and Jordan Zaccagnino (two RBIs) had two hits apiece for CV-S, which will travel to Schenevus on Monday.
