BASEBALLO-State goes 2-1
Matt Mastroianni went 4-for-4 with two RBIs to lead host Oneonta State to an 8-4 SUNY Athletic Conference victory Sunday that clinched a series win in a three-game home set against Plattsburgh (8-14, 3-5).
Christopher Orlando extended his hitting streak to eight games with a 3-for-5 effort that included three RBIs for the Red Dragons (7-13, 3-1), helping starting pitcher Alex Mastrianni (2-5) to his second straight win. Mastrianni, who struck out three, gave up four runs (one earned) on five hits in 8 2/3 innings.
On Saturday, O-State followed a 6-2 victory over Plattsburgh with an 11-1 loss at Oneonta High.
Steve Ascher (4-1) struck out 12 in the opener, allowing three hits and two unearned runs. The Cardinals ended Ascher’s 17-inning scoreless streak with a run in the first inning, but Oneonta took the lead for keeps with five runs in the sixth. Orlando sparked the rally with a two-run double in the sixth, which featured an RBI double from Jon Halligan and another two-run double from Billy Riedel.
Orlando, who capped the scoring with an RBI single in the seventh, had three hits and three RBIs. Casy Kies and Riedel contributed two hits apiece.
Plattsburgh jumped to a 3-0 lead in the second game, then scored four runs in the fourth inning and four more in the fifth.
Oneonta’s run came in the seventh, when Orlando scored on a fielder’s choice by Halligan.
The Red Dragons will travel to Mount St. Mary’s for a non-conference doubleheader at 4 p.m. Tuesday.

Jamie Whittam and Traci Lichtenstein each hit two-run singles in a six-run sixth inning Sunday as Oneonta State earned an 8-6 victory over visiting Cortland (13-9, 4-2) in the first game of a SUNYAC doubleheader.
Oneonta (14-4, 5-1), which beat Cortland for the first time since 2005, followed with a 6-1 loss in the second game.
