Katie O’Gorman singled in two runs in the fourth inning of the opener to tie the score at 2. Cortland responded with four runs in the fifth, but O-State followed with its big sixth for the victory. Nicole Marzillo scored on an error to start the rally and O’Gorman walked with the bases loaded to cut Oneonta’s deficit to 6-4. Whittam tied it with a two-run single before Lichtenstein capped the scoring with a two-run single up the middle.
Rachel Hitt faced three batters in the seventh inning to earn her sixth win of the season. Whittam and Neroda each had a pair of hits for O-State, which got three RBIs from O’Gorman and two runs from Marlene Cuevas.
Oneonta High graduate Erin Wolstenholme tripled and had three RBIs in a 3-for-3 effort to pace Cortland.
Marzillo’s RBI single in the first inning of the second game gave Oneonta a 1-0 lead. Cortland followed with two runs in the second, two in the third and two in the fifth for the win. Meaghan Kohler homered to center field for Cortland, which got a single from Wolstenholme.
On Saturday, Oneonta State swept Oswego, 5-3 and 9-1, in a SUNYAC doubleheader.
Oneonta starter Sabrina DeAngelis struck out nine and scattered 10 hits in six innings during the opener, setting up Katie O’Flynn for her first save of the season with a scoreless seventh.
Lichtenstein’s RBI single in the third tied the score at 1 and Cuevas gave O-State the lead for keeps with a two-run double. Whittam finished 2-for-3 with a run and an RBI.
In the second game, Whittam went 2-for-3 with two runs and two RBIs for the Red Dragons, who scored five times in the second inning and took a 9-0 lead into the fifth. Whittam’s two-run double highlighted the fifth-inning spurt, which included an RBI triple from Rivera.
