Hartwick junior qualifies for nationals in equestrian

STAFF REPORT

Hartwick College junior Julia Ready qualified for nationals Sunday in a zone equestrian competition at Fairfield, Conn.

Ready was the reserve champion in the intermediate flat, a competition that included 10 riders. Ready also finished sixth in novice over fences. She’ll move on to the Intercollegiate Horse Show Association’s national competition May 1-4 at Harrisburg, Pa.

Oneonta High graduate Taylor Trombley contributed a third-place finish in intermediate flat and Ashley Rizzo was fourth in walk trot for Hartwick.

GOLFFarmingdale Invitational

SUNY Delhi’s Eric Walling shot rounds of 76 and 74 on Saturday and Sunday, respectively, to finish fourth overall and help the Broncos’ A team to a third-place team finish in the Farmingdale Invitational at Bethpage State Park’s Red Course.

Delhi finished with 312 strokes, 11 behind tournament winner Dowling College and seven behind runner-up Farmingdale.

James Partridge finished seventh for Delhi, with rounds of 78 and 74.

Delhi’s B team placed fifth with 624 strokes. That team was led by George Ducharme, followed an opening-round 79 with a 73. He also finished seventh.

HONORSWomen’s Lacrosse

Hartwick College’s Steph Luce was named the Empire 8 Conference’s Goalkeeper of the Week.

It marks the second time this season Luce has earned the award.

Luce stopped 15 shots in a 10-5 loss to Nazareth on Saturday. She also tied for game-high honors with six groundballs.

On the season, Luce ranks first in the E8 and 14th nationally with 123 saves.

Hawks of the Week

Hartwick selected Ready and men’s tennis player Jefferson Monastoque as its Hawks of the Week.

Monastoque earned a three-set victory over Alfred’s Eric Teller in the Hawks’ 8-1 loss Sunday.

It marked Monastoque’s first college victory. In the super-set tiebreaker at fifth singles, Monastoque staved off seven Teller match points before winning, 14-12.

Cobleskill athete of week

Freshman Shania Marotta of the track team was named SUNY Cobleskill’s athlete of the week.

Marotta won the discus in Saturday’s Muhlenberg Invitational with a throw of 121 feet. That distance qualified Marotta for the ECAC and New York State College Track Conference meets.

The Fighting Tigers will travel to the West Chester University Invitational on Friday and Saturday.
