O-State softball, baseball split doubleheaders


Back-to-back doubles in the fifth inning by Marlene Cuevas and Brianna Rivera gave Oneonta State a two-run lead and the Red Dragons held on for a 4-3 victory over visiting Rensselaer in the second game of a non-conference softball doubleheader Tuesday. Rensselaer won the first game, 8-2.

Cuevas doubled off the fence in left and Rivera followed with a double to left-center as O-State took a 4-2 lead.

The Engineers scored in the top of the sixth inning and received a leadoff single from Tori Hunt in the seventh. Hunt went to second on a sacrifice bunt and advanced to third on a groundout. Then O-State reliever Katie O’Flynn induced Morgan Ten Eyck to pop out to first baseman Nicole Marzillo to end it.

Rachel Hitt earned her sixth victory of the season, working five-plus innings and O’Flynn got the save.

O-State scored three times in the second inning to take a 3-2 lead. Katie O’Gorman scored on the first run on a double off the fence in center and Traci Lichenstein contributed an RBI single in the inning.

In the first game, Rensselaer’s Kristina Weltzin threw a six-hitter, allowing two runs. She struck out nine to earn her seventh win of the season.

O-State (15-5) will host King’s College at 3 p.m. Saturday.

BASEBALLOneonta splits

Three Oneonta State pitchers combined on a five-hitter and Oneonta High graduate Nate Eastman hit a three-run triple in the first inning as the Red Dragons beat host Mount Saint Mary, 5-0, in the first game of a non-conference doubleheader. Mount Saint Mary won the second game, 7-6.

Casy Kies and OHS grad David Wright opened O-State’s first inning with singles. After Matt Mastroianni sacrificed the runners to second and third, Dylan Stamile walked to load the bases. Eastman followed his triple to left-center and scored on Mike Cruz’s double to center to make it 4-0. Cruz also contributed an RBI single in the sixth inning that capped the scoring.
