Oneonta High had an off day Monday.
Unfortunately for the Yellowjackets, they had a softball game to play.
Brieanna Baker walked five and Oneonta committed a season-high six errors in a 9-6 Southern Tier Athletic Conference loss at Chenango Valley.
“At first it seemed like the strike zone might not have been in her favor, but that changed later in the game,” OHS coach Randy Brockway said of Baker, who struck out nine in an eight-hitter. “We’ve played a lot of games lately and it’s tough on a pitcher right now.”
The Warriors made it that much harder on Baker, scoring four times in the first inning before Dani Forbidussi led off the second with a home run to center field. CV scored later in the inning to take a 6-1 lead, but OHS battled back to tie the score with three runs in the third and two more in the fourth.
Sara Horne rallied the Jackets (2-2, 2-2) with a triple in the third inning. Baker then walked to set up Aiyana Roupp for a two-run double that chased CV starter Amber Wallach with two out in the third.
Jenny Kipp got out of the inning but gave up two runs in the fourth. She followed with three scoreless innings, combining on an eight-hitter with Wallach.
Chelsea Henige scored the go-ahead run in the fourth inning for the Warriors, who won despite committing five errors. Forbidussi and Wallach each went 2-for-4 for CV, which capped the scoring with a two-run sixth.
Roupp went 2-for-4 and Horne (two runs) finished 2-for-5 for the Jackets, who visit STAC rival Johnson City on Thursday. Baker struck out 15 JC batters in Oneonta’s season opener on April 1 as she and Michelle Rossi combined on a no-hitter.
