Hartwick College earned the third seed for the College Water Polo Association Championships to be held April 25-27 at Bucknell University, the CWPA announced Tuesday.
The tournament champion earns an automatic bid to the NCAA Women’s Water Polo Championships, which run May 9-11 at the University of Southern California.
Hartwick (20-12) will open play at 3 p.m. April 25 against sixth-seeded Bucknell. If Hartwick advances, it would play the following day at 6 p.m. against second-seeded Princeton or No. 7 Harvard.
The Hawks will try to win the CWPA title for the first time since 2007, when it won the second of back-to-back titles. Hartwick also won the tournament in 2004.
The tournament format changed this year, with the top three teams from the Western and Southern divisions, the Division III champion and an at-large berth qualifying for the tournament.
Indiana is the top seed.
Hartwick played five of the eight participants this year going 5-4. The Hawks went 2-0 against Brown and Michigan. The Hawks also defeated Bucknell.
Hartwick lost three times to Indians and fell, 8-7, to Princeton on March 8 in the Harvard Invitational.
Several college events were postponed because Tuesday’s mix of snow and rain.
Oneonta State’s women’s lacrosse game at New Paltz was moved to 3 p.m. today. Also, SUNY Cobleskill’s softball doubleheader against visiting Southern Vermont was canceled.
Two events scheduled for today also were wiped out.
O-State’s baseball doubleheader at New Paltz was moved to noon on April 27. The Red Dragons’ softball doubleheader scheduled for 3 p.m. today was canceled.
