Hartwick College junior basketball guard Maria Foglia earned Player of the Year honors from the Empire 8 Conference, which selected freshman forward Brittney Dumas as its Rookie of the Year, the Hawks announced Thursday.
Foglia also received a spot on the E8’s First Team for the second straight season. Dumas joined junior guard Kate Purcell on the E8 Second Team.
“This is an unbelievable honor to have both Player and Rookie of the Year on our team,” said Hartwick coach Missy West, whose team is the first in E8 history to produce the conference’s Player and Rookie of the Year in the same season. “There are so many great players in this conference and to think two of our own received the highest honors is just very humbling and exciting.”
Foglia is the second Hartwick women’s basketball player to win the E8’s top award. Hartwick Hall of Famer Tiffany (Hurley) Carr earned the distinction in 2001 and 2002.
Likewise, Dumas is Hartwick’s second E8 Rookie of the Year as Lindsay Wilson won the award in 2004.
Foglia averages 13.7 points and 4.9 rebounds, and her three-point field goal percentage (37.7) ranks second in the conference. She also has 64 assists and 39 steals.
Dumas averages 14.8 points and 6.1 rebounds. She is shooting 53.4 percent from the field, which ranks 22nd among NCAA Division III players, and 71.4 percent from the free-throw line.
Purcell is an E8 second-teamer for the third straight season. She leads the Hawks in rebounding (6.5 per game), steals (70), made three-pointers (46), assists (72), and free-throw percentage (80). In the E8, Purcell ranks first in steals and second in threes and free-throw percentage.
Senior guard Marie Davison rounded out Hartwick’s honors with a spot on the E8 Sportswoman of the Year Team for the second time. One member from each E8 team is recognized with the honor, which emphasizes honor and integrity in competition.
