Hartwick College scored the first basket Sunday but lost a non-conference men’s basketball game, 74-59, at Hobart.
The first points came on Kyle Bradley’s layup 19 seconds into the game, but Hobart responded with a 15-6 run.
The Hawks battled back to take an 18-17 lead with 5 minutes, 54 seconds left in the opening half but ended up trailing, 32-24, at halftime. Hartwick failed to get closer than seven points the rest of the game.
Bradley scored 24 points on 11-for-17 shooting for the Hawks (6-4), who received 15 points and 10 rebounds from Jared Suderley. Bradley also contributed five rebounds, four assists and four steals.
Richie Bonney’s 25 points paced the Statesmen (4-4), who got 14 points off the bench from Seton Catholic Central graduate and former Oneonta High foe Cole Smothers.
Laurens graduate Aaron Laing finished with four points and a block in 18 minutes for Hartwick, which visits Nazareth on Friday for an Empire 8 Conference game.
The Hawks, who are 0-1 in the E8 this season, follow with a non-conference game Saturday at Houghton. They’ll then play the first of five straight home games Jan. 11, when Hartwick will host conference rival St. John Fisher. That game will mark Hartwick’s first at Lambros Arena since a 75-72 Empire 8 loss to Utica on Dec. 4.
