OHS girls clinch East Division title

Sierra Sangetti-Daniels had her season high of 14 points and Oneonta High clinched its third straight Southern Tier Athletic Conference East Division girls basketball title with a 70-37 win at Norwich on Friday.

Minnie Webster scored all 12 of her points as the Yellowjackets took a 15-8 lead after one quarter. The Yellowjackets (12-0, 10-0) extended their lead to 37-11 after outscoring the Purple Tornado, 22-3, in the second quarter.

Webster hit four three-pointer in the opening quarter.

“Webster’s first quarter was key for us tonight,” said OHS coach Matt Miller, whose team improved to 12-0 overall and 10-0 in STAC. “If she does not hit those four three-pointers I think the complexion of the game changes and we might be in a fight.

“I was very please with our second quarter,” he continued. “We were able to get some easy buckets in the flow of the offense.”

The game was a rematch of last season’s Section Four Class B final, which the Yellowjackets won for their record fifth straight sectional title.

Mariah Ruff scored a game-high 18 points for the Yellowjackets, who will play Class AA Penfield on Sunday at Onondaga Community College. Penfield returned all five starters from the team that advanced to the Class AA state final.

“This will be a big challenge for us,” Miller said. “We have not seen the likes of this team so far this year. They are big and very athletic. The key for us will be handling their press and getting into our offensive sets. A game like this can only help us coming down the stretch in the STAC playoffs and in sectional play.”

Breanna Cashman had 10 points to lead Norwich.

Unatego 48, Hancock 30

Casey Manzanero scored 15 points, and Robin Foster and Sarah Mannina each had nine as visiting Unatego won in the Midstate Athletic Conference.
