Brittney Herrick had 10 kills Thursday, but host Oneonta High suffered its first loss of the volleyball season as defending Section Four Class B champion Owego swept a Southern Tier Athletic Conference match, 25-11, 25-22, 25-10.
“It was the combination of them playing good volleyball and us playing awful tonight,” said OHS coach Lee Ferrara, whose team lost four times to the Indians last season. “Not taking anything away from Owego, but we have to be on all the time to beat them and we were not.”
Carrie Farr’s 21 assists paced Owego (6-0, 6-0), which received 10 kills from Kim Lavender and 13 digs from Abbey Manning.
“We don’t ever see an offense hitting as fast at us as Owego,” Ferrara said. “They run a very fast offense and we just don’t see that from any other team. It’s a little bit of a shell-shock — it always is — but we make adjustments and the matches get closer each time we see them.”
Paige Shaughnessy finished with four aces and Kayla Snyder had four blocks for Owego, which has beaten OHS in the last two Section Four Class B finals.
Krissy Wells contributed eight assists and six digs for the Yellowjackets (5-1, 5-1), who are competing this season at the Class C level. OHS visits Chenango Valley on Wednesday.
