Freshman Mary Rommer, the women’s 5K winner in the Pit Run on Sunday in Oneonta, also scored for the Spartans (11-2, 8-0), who will travel to Sidney on Thursday for a key MAC game. Sidney’s lone loss in conference came in a 4-1 loss to Unatego earlier in the season.
“It’s a big game for both teams,” said Unatego coach Sue Herodes, whose team won the Section Four Class C title last season.
Sidney 4, Oxford 0
Katie Kirk scored 10 seconds into play and finished with two goals as Sidney won a Midstate Athletic Conference game on the road.
Sidney sent the ball back to Kailyn Gravel after the opening kickoff. Gravel then played a long ball that deflected off a defender and to Kirk, who then scored.
“I believe so,” Sidney coach Jody Gravelin said when asked if that’s the quickest one of her team’s has scored. “That’s why we set up the kickoff the way we do, and it actually worked.”
Bethany Karl made it 2-0 seven minutes into play.
Mackensie Gravelin also scored for the Warriors (8-4, 7-1), who will host division-leading Unatego on Thursday.
“We have to play with confidence,” Gravelin said. “Unatego is an intimidating team, so we have to stay focused.”
