Redskins girls get their kicks

Staff Report

Maggie Hall set up two goals with corner kicks, including the winner, as Cooperstown earned a 3-2 girls soccer victory Friday over visiting Waterville in the Center State Conference.

“We’ve scored quite a few goals this year on her corner kicks,” said Cooperstown coach Jen Pindar, whose team won its fourth straight after Bella Anania scored the winner.

Hall’s second assist came from the right side with a little less than nine minutes gone in the second half. She lined a low corner kick to Anania in the middle of the box, a few yards from the goal. Anania shot low and to the left to cap the scoring.

Cooperstown trailed, 2-1, at halftime, but tied it about two minutes into the second half. Lexi Bloomfield made a long pass from outside the box that Jordian Siver ran down and headed into the goal.

“They really played very well the second half,” Pindar said. “We started playing our passing game, and we really woke up and played with intensity.”

Waterville took two of its 15 shots in the second half, both in the closing minutes.

Jenna Bloomquist’s rebound goal gave the Indians the early lead, but Julie Dykstra tied it less than three minutes later on a corner kick from Hall.

Jessica Scones put Waterville back up with a little more than eight minutes left in the half.

After starting the season 0-5, Cooperstown (5-6, 4-4) has won five of its last six games. With two division games remaining, it needs one win to qualify for a playoff spot. The Redskins host Hamilton on Thursday.

Jordan Beers had three goals and an assist to lead host Franklin to a non-league win.

“She’s hitting some bombs from 20-25 yards lately,” Franklin coach J.J. Laing said of Beers, who assisted Jessie Downin on the opening goal 6:35 into the first half.
