Caroline Leonard started her sophomore volleyball season Monday with 16 kills, leading Cooperstown to a 3-1 non-league victory over visiting Owen D. Young in the season opener for both teams.
Leonard also had five aces for Cooperstown, which earned a 25-16, 25-14, 23-25, 25-19 triumph.
“She played for me last year as a freshman and I don’t usually take freshmen, so she’s pretty talented,” 15th-year Cooperstown coach Rich Jantzi said of Leonard, who will study abroad next year. “She’ll be in a Rotary program (next season), so I’ll have to wait until she’s a senior to get her back.”
Senior co-captain Brooke Liner contributed nine kills, four blocks and two aces for Cooperstown, which received seven kills from McKenna Hage. Katie Franck finished with 12 assists and four aces for Cooperstown, which is coming off a 10-6 season that ended in the quarterfinals of the Section Three Class C Tournament.
Cooperstown hosts Mount Markham on Wednesday, visits Hamilton on Friday and will compete in the Dolgeville Tournament on Saturday.
“We have a busy week,” Jantzi said.
