OHS wrestlers open with loss at rival Norwich

Staff Report

Sam Sherrill, Kirkland Dolan and Krishan Chopra won consecutive matches by pin Tuesday, but Oneonta High opened its wrestling season with a 45-30 loss at Norwich in the Southern Tier Athletic Conference.

“That was good, but we made some boo-boos in the match,” OHS coach John Nealis said. “We had our chances.”

Norwich took control with a three-bout run starting at 145 pounds. Tristan Rifanburg (pin at 145), Frank Garcia (technical fall at 152) and Nick Murphy (pin at 160) fueled the spurt, which gave the Purple Tornado a 39-12 lead with four matches to go.

Sherrill and Dolan followed with back-to-back first-period pins at 170 and 182, respectively, for the Yellowjackets, who got another pin from Chopra in the third period of his 195-pound match.

Freshman Benji Blacklock earned his first varsity victory with a 14-7 decision at 113 for OHS, which also received wins from Dan Decker (5-0 decision at 138) and Kris Walrath (forfeit at 285).

Oneonta will compete Saturday in the Goshen Duals.
