OHS senior Balnis rolls 686 series in win

Staff Report

First-year Oneonta High bowling coach Mark Smithling said he wasn’t sure if Caryn Balnis set a program record Tuesday at Holiday Lanes in Oneonta.

If she didn’t, though, she had to be pretty close.

Balnis, a senior, rolled a 686 series that led unbeaten OHS to 2,617 pins en route to a 4-1 Southern Tier Athletic Conference victory over Susquehanna Valley. She followed a 233 with games of 185 and 268 as Balnis set personal records for a single game and a series.

“That’s got to be way up there,” Smithling said of where Balnis’ series and game might rank in OHS bowling history. “That last game, she struck in the first frame, had two 9-spares and then rolled eight strikes in a row. She definitely has the capability of doing that.”

Balnis, who had nine pins on her final shot, helped the Yellowjackets to a 3-0 start this season.

Jeanette Rock contributed a season-high 207 and a 187 for OHS, which received a 577 series on games of 197, 188 and 192 from sophomore Emily Loucks.

Demi May’s 201 paces the Sabers, who finished with 2,410 pins as a team.

OHS will visit Norwich for a STAC match at Plaza Lanes on Monday.
