UV boys rally for tourney win

David Dufresne scored nine of his team-best 22 points in the fourth quarter Friday, when Unadilla Valley scored 30 points to secure a 73-63 boys basketball victory over Vernon-Verona-Sherrill in the opening round of the Sherburne-Earlville Tournament.

“We were down nine points in the fourth quarter and within the next three minutes of actual game time, we were up nine,” said UV coach Matt Osborne, whose team outscored V-V-S, 30-19, in the final period. “We put on a press, got some steals for a lot of easy buckets and made some free throws.”

The Storm (2-0) went 13-for-15 at the foul line in the fourth quarter and finished 16-for-21 for the game.

Nate Shackelton contributed 17 points for UV, which received 11 apiece from Brett Hanslmaier and Nick White. Hanslmaier scored seven points in the fourth quarter, when White had six.

Dalton Cousin’s game-high 24 points paced V-V-S, which received 21 from Nick Metzger and hit 10 three-point field goals as a team.

UV will face Rome Free Academy in the championship game at 7 p.m. Saturday. V-V-S will meet Sherburne-Earlville in the consolation game at 5 p.m. Saturday.

Jordan Manikas scored a game-high 20 points to lead host Cooperstown to a non-league victory.

Manikas scored eight 20 points in the second quarter, helping Cooperstown to a 25-16 advantage at halftime.
