Morris teams rally past Franklin

Matt Morlock homered, doubled and drove in four runs Thursday, helping the Morris baseball team to an 8-6 come-from-behind victory over Franklin in the Tri-Valley League.

The Mustangs (2-2) trailed, 6-1, before Morlock hit a two-run homer in the fifth inning. Morris then scored five times in the sixth to give Kerry Smith the pitching victory in relief. Smith took over for starter Andrew Dougherty in the fourth inning

Josh Rutherford contributed two hits for the Mustangs, who visit Deposit on Saturday for a non-league game.

Joe Terrano’s two-run homer in the first inning gave Franklin the early lead.

Tanner Murphy went 3-for-5 with three runs, two RBIs and a double to lead visiting Worcester to a Tri-Valley League victory.

Steve Griffiths tripled, singled, scored twice and drove in a run for the Wolverines, who scored nine times in their first at-bats.

Pheonix Howard had two hits, two stolen bases and an RBI for the Leopards (1-2, 1-2), who visit Edmeston on Monday.

Unatego 7, B-G 1

Singles by Lucas DeJoy, Derek Liner, Kellen Komenda, Jon Wingate and Phil Youngs helped Unatego to six runs in the second inning as the Spartans won in the Midstate Athletic Conference.

Because Unatego’s field was not ready, the game was played at Bainbridge-Guilford, but the Spartans batted second.

Komenda and Youngs had two-run singles in the second.

Winning pitcher Quinn Barnhart struck out five and walked five over six innings.

DeJoy, Komenda, Wingate and Youngs had two hits apiece for Unatego (4-1, 2-0), which will travel to Oneonta High on Saturday.

Bainbridge-Guilford’s Corbin Palmer did not allow a run over the final four innings.

Deposit 8, UV 7

Two throwing errors in the bottom of the eighth inning allowed host Deposit to rally for a MAC victory.

The Lumberjacks loaded the bases in the eighth on a singles by Jade Wank and Brandon Macumber and a walk by Austin Decker. With two outs, Zach Gifford grounded to short and reached on a throwing error, and the tying and winning runs scored on another throwing error by the first baseman.

Unadilla Valley took a 7-5 lead in the top of the eighth on RBI singles by Kyle King and Kurt Haycook.

Austin Decker, Trevor Stiles, Macumber and Babcock had two hits apiece for Deposit (2-2), which will host Morris on Saturday.

King and Andrew Radke had two hits apiece for the Storm.

Levi Decker’s match-low 39 included a birdie on the sixth hole, but Morris dropped a non-league match.

Keegan Higley and Eric Zimmerman shot 45 and 47, respectively, to lead the Walton (2-0).

Oneonta High will host Seton Catholic Central at 7 p.m. today at Hartwick College’s Wright Stadium.

The game was originally for 5 p.m. at OHS.

Sidney’s boys and girls swept a five-team MAC meet Wednesday at Bainbridge-Guilford.

The Warriors boys had 174 points to easily beat B-G/A (54), Harpursville (46), Unatego (42) and Oxford (17).

Nate Magnussen, Jack Hillenbrand, Mike Ward and Austin Dean won two events apiece for Sidney. Magnussen had times of 11.8 and 24.3 seconds in the 100 and 200 meters, respectively. Hillenbrand won the 1,600 (5:03.9) and 3,200 (10:43.5), Ward swept the hurdles, winning the 110 in 17.0 and the 400 in 1:05.9, and Dean won the discus (128 feet, 10 inches) and the shot put (44-6).

Austin McCarroll contributed a victory in the triple jump, covering 40-11.

Sidney’s girls had 122 points, 22 ahead of runner-up B-G/A. Unatego and Oxford had 73 and 15, respectively, and Harpursville did not score.

Bethany Karl led Sidney with wins in the shot put (32-7) and discus (78-6).

B-G/A sophomore Julia Knapp won the 400 (1:03.6) and the long jump (16-4) and Miltilda Knapp placed first in the 100 (13.6) and 200 (28.8).
