OHS girls start strong in Class B

Staff Report

Cami Cleaveland, Amy Hait and Taylor Hitchcock had three goals apiece at Lloyd F. Baker Field on Wednesday as top-seeded Oneonta High opened the Section Four Class B Girls Soccer Tournament with an 11-0 rout of visiting Southern Tier Athletic Conference foe Chenango Valley.

“It was good to get our mind right in a game against a team that didn’t realistically have a shot to beat us,” said OHS coach Jerry Mackey, whose team won its second straight Southern Tier Athletic Conference title Saturday with a 2-0 defeat of Class AA Vestal at Baker Field. “Now we are ‘lose one and you’re done.’ We’re locked in to what we need to do.”

Taryn More, Madison Miller, Meg Burns, Dani Nicosia and Brieanna Baker also scored for the Yellowjackets (15-2), who received five saves from backup goalie Mariah Ruff. Starting goalie Emmalee Sloman made no saves and had an assist for OHS, which finished with a 31-6 advantage in shots against the eight-seeded Warriors (5-8-2).

The defending Section Four Class B champion Jackets will host No. 4 seed Waverly (13-1-2) of the Interscholastic Athletic Conference at 6 p.m. Saturday at Baker Field.

The Wolverines, who beat Whitney Point, 2-0, on

Wednesday, are led by 32 goals from forward Liia Carpenter.

“I know they are a pretty talented program,” Mackey said. “We will be ready for them. Our girls have done good work the last few years getting ready for this playoff run.

“It’s soccer, so you never know,” he continued. “We have five games left in the season if we’re fortunate, or our season could be over Saturday if we’re not.”

Unatego 2, Trumansburg 0@DS | Breakhead:

Cassidy Newman and Casey Manzanero scored second-half goals to lead top-seeded host Unatego to a Section Four Class C quarterfinal victory over Interscholastic Athletic Conference member Trumansburg.
