Hartwick women fall at Keuka, 7-6

Taylor Smith scored with 33 seconds left to give host Keuka College a 7-6 non-conference women’s lacrosse victory over Hartwick College on Wednesday.

Smith scooped a groundball in front of Hartwick’s net before scoring her fifth goal of the game.

Hartwick (3-4) won the ensuing faceoff but turned the ball over before it could take a shot.

Lisa Littleton had two goals to lead the Hawks. Kate Purcell and Kia Ference contributed a goal and an assist apiece for Hartwick.

Littleton’s second goal of the game came off an assist from Jackie Moynihan and tied at 6 the score with about 10 minutes left.

Keuka (2-1) outshot Hartwick, 24-19, and led in groundballs, 25-22.

Hartwick, which received 11 saves from Steph Luce, opens Empire 8 Conference play at 1 p.m. Saturday at Utica College.

Union 19, O-State 15

The Red Dragons dropped a non-conference game at Clermont, Fla. No other information was available.


Montclair 9, O-State 6

Ivan Plata went 3-for-4 with two RBIs and two runs, and Chris Orlando hit two doubles and drove in two runs for Oneonta State, which lost a non-conference game on the road.

Montclair (8-4) scored eight runs on 11 hits off O-State starter Andrew LaFontaine, who lasted 2 1/3 innings.

Chris Massaroni and Rob Peluso also had RBIs for the Red Dragons (3-11), who will play a doubleheader at Old Westbury beginning at 11 this morning.


Concordia 8, Hartwick 1

Peter Dumas and Brian Redder earned a victory at first doubles, but Hartwick College fell in a non-conference match at Hilton Head, S.C.

Dumas and Redder defeated Skip Turner and Taylor Shaffer, 8-4.

Freshman Liam Brown and sophomore Keith O’Connor dropped three-set matches for the Hawks. Brown fell, 6-2, 2-6, 6-3, at fourth singles to Antoine Leone. O’Connor lost at sixth singles, 6-4, 5-7, 10-3, to Ryan Buffamonte.

Hartwick (0-2) will play Franklin College at 6:30 p.m. Friday at Hilton Head.


Three Hawks recognized

Three Hartwick College women players were honored by the College Water Polo Association.

Junior Sami Capparelli was named the Western Division Player of the Week, freshman Michaela Davies earned Western Division Rookie of the Week honors and junior Jemma Dendy Young was picked as the Western Division’s Defensive Player of the Week.

Capparelli, who earned her sixth Western Division Player of the Week honor this season, scored 14 goals during the Arizona State Sun Devil Tournament this past weekend, including five in a 19-7 win over Pomona-Pitzer.

Davies had 31 saves in wins over Pomona-Pitzer, Cap Baptist and Colorado State.

Dendy Young set a Hartwick record by making 11 steals against Colorado State. She’s earned Western Division Defensive Player of the Week two times this season.

Hartwick (22-9) will travel to Siena at 7 p.m. Tuesday.
