It’s never too early to start working on the nice list.

Oneonta High’s girls will try to stay right at the top two days after Christmas as the Yellowjackets and a host of other area high school basketball teams will compete in holiday tournaments starting Thursday.

OHS improved to 6-0 this season with a 58-46 non-league victory over 2011-12 Class A state semifinalist Pearl River on Saturday. The win marked the Section Four Class B champion Yellowjackets’ second of the season against a Class A team as they also downed Troy, 45-32, in their season opener.

Oneonta will compete in the Pete Hyde Tournament at Johnson City Middle School, which will host 10 games over Thursday and Friday. The Jackets open against Southern Tier Athletic Conference rival Owego – the defending Section Four Class A champion – at 5 p.m. Thursday.

OHS follows Friday against Vestal, another Class A team that plays in the STAC. The Jackets’ season schedule states that game will start at noon or 3:30 p.m. Friday.

There are no overall championship or consolation games for the Pete Hyde Tournament, a Coaches vs. Cancer event that is named after the former Maine-Endwell coach. Chenango Valley, Johnson City, Liverpool, Maine-Endwell, Norwich, Seton Catholic Central and Union-Endicott also will compete.

Junior point guard Mariah Ruff is averaging a team-best 14.6 points for Oneonta, which won the Section Four Class A title in 2008 and the last four sectional crowns at the Class B level.

Oneonta’s boys will play Thursday and Friday as well, at the Unadilla Valley Tournament. The Jackets (2-5) open at 6 p.m. Thursday against Oxford, before the host Storm meets Sherburne-Earlville at 7:45 p.m. The tournament wraps up Friday with the consolation game at 4:30 p.m. and the championship at 8 p.m.

Both Cooperstown teams also have holiday engagements.

The defending Section Three Class C champion Redskins boys (4-3), led by 23.7 points-per-game scorer Ethan Bliss, will host the Dick White Tournament beginning Thursday. Sidney and Cobleskill-Richmondville open the event at 4 p.m., followed by Cooperstown and Fort Plain at 8 p.m. The consolation and championship are slated for 6 and 8 p.m., respectively.

Cooperstown’s girls will take a 6-0 record into the first round of the Vernon-Verona-Sherrill Tournament on Thursday, when the Redskins face Holland-Patent at 3:30 p.m. The winner will play Clinton or the host school in the consolation or championship game Friday. Sumer Murdock is the Redskins’ top scorer, at 15.8 ppg.
