Area wrestlers shine at Cordell

Staff Report

There are no guarantees that a local wrestler will win a championship during the 24th annual Oneonta Rotary-Ross Cordell Tournament at Oneonta High.

There’s a pretty good chance that will happen at 145 pounds, though.

Unatego’s Codie Nichols, Timmy Parsons of Bainbridge-Guilford/Afton and Oneonta’s James Longo claimed three of the four semifinal spots at 145 pounds Friday, when Burnt Hills finished the first day atop the 16-team tournament with 83 points.

Nichols will face Parsons for a title berth in the 145-pound weight class, which features Longo against Chris LaTourette of Saugerties in Saturday’s other semifinal.

After receiving a first-round bye, Nichols earned his 100th varsity victory with a quarterfinal pin of Burnt Hills’ Nate Sisler in 3 minutes, 43 seconds.

Parsons followed a first-round pin of Elmira’s Evan Rathbun in 4:53 with a 15-4 major decision over Sandy Creek’s Zach Brown in the quarterfinals.

Longo received a first-round bye and made it to the semifinals with a 13-second pin of Unadilla Valley’s Brittany Brown.

Also reaching the semifinal rounds were 2012 Cordell champions Justin Cirigliano and B-G/A teammate Mark Viviano.

Last season’s champion at 138 pounds, Cirigliano followed a bye with an 8-1 quarterfinal decision over Sandy Creek’s Zach Pfluger at 138. He’ll face Joey Butler of Burnt Hills in Saturday’s semifinal round.

Viviano opened with a bye before pinning Sandy Creek’s A.J. Willis in 58 seconds during a 195-pound quarterfinal. The 182-pound champ last season, Viviano will meet Saugerties’ James Bethel in Saturday’s semifinals.

Other area wrestlers who advanced to Saturday’s semifinal rounds were B-G/A’s Josh Lindsay (99 pounds), Chris Cirigliano (106), Brett Hubbard (120), Jesse Griswold (132) and Jamie Griswold (152); Edmeston’s Grey Bennis (182); Oneonta’s Mitchell Spaziani (106), Kirkland Dolan (160) and Cory Corkwell (285); and Unatego’s Kevin Thayer (152), Leland Slawson (160) and Ryan Marszal (170).

Saugerties stands second with 76.5 points, followed by B-G/A at 70.5. Oneonta is sixth with 50 points, Unatego is ninth at 40, Unadilla Valley is 13th at 14.5, and Edmeston is 14th with 9 points.
