Sidney boys win tourney title

Tournament MVP Hunter Sowersby had a big first quarter and Sidney’s boys held their 11th straight basketball opponent to fewer than 50 points in winning the title game of the Dick White Tournament, 61-45, Saturday at Cooperstown.

Sowersby scored 11 of his game-high 18 points as Sidney took a 22-10 lead after one quarter.

“If we’re trapping and he’s out front, he’s the guys we’re going to look to if we get steals,” Sidney coach Mike Brazee said of Sowersby’s success.

All-tournament selection Brandon Walters contributed 12 points, including 6-for-6 from the free throw line, nine rebounds, eight assists and three steals for the Warriors (11-1), who are unbeaten since a season-opening loss to Utica Notre Dame.

Of Walters’ assists, Brazee said: “They were playing a 3-2 zone and late in the fourth quarter and we put him in the high post. He can score from there, but he was finding other people.”

Damian Zimmer contributed 10 points for Sidney.

“We felt the potential was there,” Brazee said of his team’s start to the season. “Zimmer had the football injury and he was out until this tournament started in December. He was our leading scorer and second-leading rebounder last year. Everyone else was basically back and we had a pretty good record last year when we made it to the sectional semifinals.

“We’re starting to get there,” he continued. “We’re playing really good defense.”

The Warriors will host Bainbridge-Guilford on Friday.

Cooperstown 58, Cobleskill 37

Sawyer Haney scored a game-high 18 points as host Cooperstown won the consolation game of the Dick White Tournament.

“We got some scoring from a couple guys that don’t always score big for us,” Cooperstown coach Dave Bertram said. “Sawyer had a nice game getting some layups and getting points in transition. Jordan Manikas did a nice job getting points for us as well.”
