Hawk named E8’s top player
Hartwick College junior Kate Purcell earned Empire 8 Conference Player of the Week honors for women’s basketball Monday.
Purcell helped the Hawks to conference victories Friday and Saturday.
On Friday, Purcell became Hartwick’s all-time leader in three-pointers made during the Hawks’ victory over Houghton. She broke the record with 5 minutes, 55 seconds left in the first half. Purcell finished with 10 points, nine assists, seven rebounds and six steals.
Against Nazareth on Saturday, she had 14 points, eight rebounds, four assists and three steals.
Hartwick will host Stevens at 6 tonight.
Hawks of the Week
Purcell joined men’s basketball Jared Suderley as Hartwick’s Hawks of the Week.
Suderley, a junior, helped Hartwick to wins over Houghton and Nazareth on Friday and Saturday, respectively.
Against Houghton, he had 18 points and four rebounds. He shot 6-for-9 from the field and 5-for-5 from the free throw line.
Suderley had 25 points and 11 rebounds against Nazareth. He hit all six of his three-point attempts in that game.
Cobleskill athlete of the week
SUNY Cobleskill named freshman Mukhtar Barros its athlete of the week.
Barros won the triple jump and placed sixth in the long jump in the Wesleyan University Invitational on Saturday.
Barros covered 42 feet, 9 inches on his winning triple jump, a distance that qualified him for the New York State Track Conference Championships. He long jumped 19-10 ¾.
The Fighting Tigers will compete at Northeastern University at 3 p.m. Friday.
